Colorado Battleground Seats – 2006

Colorado has three congressional seats listed as competitive, which is a national record, based on the closeness of the 2004 election:  Democrat John Salazar (3rd CD), Republican Marilyn Musgrave (4th CD) and Bob Beauprez (7th CD) are ranked 3rd, 7th and 28th, respectively.

Although candidates, campaigns and local issues dominate in congressional races, the low ratings of the President and Congress can have a reverse-coattail effect for the Republican Party.  Congressman Beauprez’s open district (he is running for governor), in particular, is competitive and could shift to the Democrats.  John Kerry won it with 51 percent while losing Colorado to Bush, 52 percent to 47 percent.  Both Congresspersons Salazar and Musgrave have already raised massive campaign war chests, anticipating expensive, aggressive re-elections.
